Sudan’s Green Renaissance: Rebuilding Nature for a Sustainable Future

Nature & Resources | Sudan’s Path to Environmental Renewal

Sudan is taking significant strides toward revitalizing its natural heritage, ensuring that nature remains a source of strength and prosperity for all:

Reforestation efforts flourish
A landmark initiative in White Nile State has planted over one million Acacia saplings across 2,500 hectares, driven by UNHCR and local partners. This green wave brings both environmental restoration and job opportunities, especially for women and refugee communities.

Commitment to land recovery
Sudan has pledged to restore 14.6 million hectares by 2030. Already, 2.3 million hectares are being revived as part of the Great Green Wall Initiative — bringing training to over 1,700 farmers in sustainable practices.

Nature-based agriculture and peace
The UNEP-led Wadi El Ku 2 project in North Darfur has supported 100,000 people across 22 village councils. Through water-harvesting infrastructure and local governance, this initiative blends climate resilience with community cooperation.

Boosting food security in protected zones
A joint EU–UNEP program near Dinder National Park promotes climate-smart farming and inclusive environmental governance—enhancing both livelihoods and protected ecosystems.
